Yoisho! Our brand new flagship store on Panton Street is now open. In fact, this week marks two weeks since our first day of trade. We couldn’t have done it without the support of our loyal and amazing customers, so all of us at Japan Centre would like to say a big ‘thank you!’
As promised, our new flagship store combines the traditional elements of a ‘depachika’ (the Japanese word for a basement food hall) with a range of unique specialist rooms that are all set around our open kitchens and central dine-in courtyard which seats up to 100 people. We’ve got a bigger and better space as well as more of everything you love from Japan Centre. It is also fully equipped with a lift, making it accessible for everyone.
Inside Japan Centre Panton Street
Watch our short video for a quick tour of our new Panton Street food hall. In this video, you’ll see all the major areas of the store. These include the speciality rooms, the dining courtyard, the deli counter, the confectionery and grocery aisles as well as the exterior and first-floor ceramics display.
Japan Centre Panton Street is the UK’s very first Japanese depachika food hall. It is centrally located at 35b Panton Street SW1Y 4EA, making it just a short walk away from the Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square stations. There’s also an ODEON cinema just opposite so you can grab a before/after movie dinner with friends or family. We’re also currently having an opening sale where you can receive up to 50% off 40 products in-store and online until 1 October. So you can stock up on all your essential Japanese cupboard staples. We also offer an in-store brown rice milling service.
The Miso Room
The first speciality room you will see as you enter our basement floor is the miso room. Each day, fresh miso is added and you have to option to measure as much miso as you want and also try it before you buy it. Additionally, our store assistants will be on hand to help you blend your own miso from the varieties available. We also have a wide selection of organic and niche miso products so you’ll be able to explore more and fall even deeper in love with Japanese miso!
The Tea Room
The second speciality room is our tea room. In this room, you’ll find a wide range of Japanese teas like gyokuro, genmaicha and matcha to name a few. On the shelves, we also have special green tea blends and unique combinations like kombu and plum. Our store assistants will also be able to help you mill your own matcha powder in-store. You can even experiment with how you want your matcha tea to be milled.
The Sake Room
Our sake room is decorated with light Japanese wood textures and carries with it an air of sophistication. You can browse, sample and purchase from the wide range of Japanese sake available. Our knowledgeable staff will be able to make recommendations to help you make the best-informed choices. We also have a wide selection of Japanese whisky as well as books to help you learn more about sake and sake etiquette.
On 20 September 2017, we held our official opening press party at our new flagship store. We were joined by the press, business partners, staff and industry friends. Our CEO Tak Tokumine and Managing Director Hannah Tokumine both made moving speeches. Our honoured guests also had the chance to watch the kagami biraki ceremony by Tak and Hannah Tokumine. Afterwards, we all got to enjoy sake from straight from the barrel. Watch our behind the scenes video to see what happened.
Browse our gallery for more images of our amazing press party. We had the pleasure of watching a live taiko performance and Europe’s only tsugaru shamisen player, Hibiki Ichikawa. The Japan Society also draped our guests in stylish and classy kimonos and yukata.
