Gekkeikan Masters Cooking Competition – One Year On!

Last year, Japan Centre held its first Masters Cooking Competition in partnership with sake brewers Gekkeikan. The competition was open to all chefs and experienced home cooks; each entrant was asked to create two original sake inspired recipes, one sweet and one savoury. The purpose of this event was to spread the knowledge of ‘Cooking with Sake’ in cuisines outside of Japan.

The winner of our first competition was Natasha Cohen, a blogger and copywriter from London. Here are her thoughts, a year on:

Winning the first Gekkeikan Masters Cooking Challenge was a crazy, wonderful experience. I’ve always been passionate about food and cooking, so it was a great opportunity to have fun while pushing myself a little. Since winning the competition and the ensuing trip to Kyoto (still can’t quite believe that all happened!), I’ve been keeping up with my knowledge of sake and continuing to experiment with its different forms in the kitchen. During my time at Gekkeikan’s brewery, learning about how it’s created gave me a lot of respect both for the history of the product and the product itself. I will certainly continue to learn and develop more recipes.
