To celebrate the UK screening of Mitsuko Delivers, the latest comedy from Japanese film director Yuya Ishii, Japan Centre is running a competition to give away 3 copies of Ishii’s quirky film Sawako Decides to three lucky winners!
New Release ‘Mitsuko Delivers’
The newest film from ‘Sawako Decides’ director Yuya Ishii, Mitsuko Delivers opens at the ICA Cinema from May 11th and runs until May 24th.
This breathless new comedy tells the story of a woman (Riisa Naka, Summer Wars) who’s at a delicate juncture in life; alone, flat broke and to top it all nine-months pregnant. Her folks think she’s in California living the high life with her baby’s GI father. In fact she’s in Tokyo, searching for a purpose, and eventually finding one in the ramshackle working-class alley where she grew up… Mitsuko Delivers is original, fanciful and adventurous – quintessentially Japanese.

Departures is beautiful film, but my all time fave is Seven Samurai. Favourite actor is between Toshiro Mifune and Tadanobu Asano .
Takeshi Kitano – because he is supercool
Who or what is your favourite Japanese actor or movie and why?
I don’t have a favourite Japanese actor but I do have a favourite Japanese movie that I’ve always loved. Kamikaze Girls下妻物語 is definitely my favourite movie because I love Sweet Lolita fashion and found this movie very funny, entertaining and what more? Super fun to watch. I loved how it explored friendship between 2 girls who are from 2 different worlds, Kyoko Fukada who played Momoko Ryugasaki was a very fascinating character, her development throughout the movie was seemly slow paced as she wished to have been born in the time of Rococo and has a huge obsession over frilly cute Lolita clothes, near the end she had a twist of personality to stand up for her tomboyish friend against a rough gang, I love characters who have such bravery to defend a friend, it was truly an outstanding experience. I also loved this movie because the characters around Momoko were exaggerated and extremely funny, I can’t get enough of the comedy and loved the movie to bits.
My husband and my favourite are always comedies. The best is “Drugstore Girl” So funny!
My favourite Japanese film is Grave of The Fireflies, combining clasic Studio Ghibli animation with a powerful anti-war message.
I really enjoyed Kamome Shokudo. It is set in Helsinki and tells the story of a young Japanese woman setting up a canteen in Helsinki. Its a slow movie but I love the way it explores the mix of Finnish and Japanese cultures and food.
Masi Oka – he’s a brilliant actor. Love him on Heroes.
A winner has been chosen, please check your facebook messages or profile to see if you’re the lucky one!
